This term our topic is ‘Castles’. We had a very exciting ‘castle day’ to introduce our topic. We all dressed up as different people that would live in a castle and took part in different activities such as portrait making, designing our own coat of arms and cooking. We made our own medieval goblets to use at our banquet in the afternoon. Some children even performed gymnastics and joke telling to entertain everyone!
In History we have been learning about different features of a castle and what they were used for. We are all looking forward to learning more about these features when we visit Windsor Castle! We have also made a timeline of different castles in England, according to how old they are. In our Geography lessons we looked at different towers and castles from around the world and found the countries and continents that they were from on a world map.
In English we have been learning about different fairy tales, particularly focusing on Rapunzel. We have been doing drama activities such as interviewing each other in role as the characters. We then used this activity to help us write character descriptions. We are also going to be reading other books about tunnels and towers such as ‘The Tunnel’ by Anthony Browne. We will then be writing our own stories set in a dark and scary tunnel.
In Design and Technology we will be designing and making a 3D castle with different features. We will be thinking about what would be the best materials to look like the different features and how we can join them together.
Our topic this term has been ‘Street Detectives’. We have been investigating and finding out all about Feltham. We began our topic with a history walk around Feltham. We had to look out for different features and learnt lots of interesting things. We were surprised to find out that the vicarage by St Dunstan’s church is the oldest building in Feltham!
Our learning in Geography has been based around map reading. We looked at some local maps of Feltham and used a key to find different features. Then we made our own maps of the route that we took during our history walk.
In History we have been looking at books and old photographs to find out how Feltham has changed over the years. We did some fantastic non-fiction writing about how the high street has changed and what it would have been like to do our shopping seventy years ago. We have also been reading stories about towns such as ‘The Town and the Country Mouse’. We acted out the story together in groups and then retold it using interesting story language.
In Art we have been learning about the artist L.S Lowry. We looked at some of his art work of towns in the north of England and discussed what we liked and disliked about it. We then recreated one of his paintings, thinking about the perspective and the colours he had used. At the end of the topic we did our own paintings of Feltham in the style of Lowry.
Our topic this term has been ‘Life at Sea’. We started our topic with a visit from the RNLI who taught us all about being safe near the water. Now we have our own RNLI station as part of our busy learning outside. We have done some fantastic role play rescuing people and plotting where we need to go on maps of the United Kingdom.
In History we have been learning about famous people who rescued people at sea such as Grace Darling. We have also been learning about famous sea explorers and putting them in order of time. We wrote about Christopher Columbus and were very surprised to find out that when he discovered America he was actually looking for Japan! In Geography we have been learning to locate and name the seas and oceans surrounding the United Kingdom and have been learning about human and physical features. We had to make a treasure map of an island and plot in different human and physical features we might find there.
In English we have been reading and writing non-fiction texts about famous explorers. We will also be planning and writing our own rescue stories.
We have been doing lots of investigations in Science to find out more about floating and sinking. We experimented with different materials to see if that affected whether something floated or sank. We also looked at the shape of objects. We made different shapes out of plasticine to find out which shapes were more likely to float. We have been doing lots of investigations in Science to find out more about floating and sinking. Our learning this term will be based around our topic of minibeasts. To begin our topic we went on a minibeast hunt around the school! We had to find which microhabitats different minibeasts lived in and how that habitat was suitable for them. In Science we will also be learning about life cycles. We will have some of our own caterpillars within the year group so we can observe their life cycle. We are also going to be having a visit from ‘Bug man’ who is going to bring lots of interesting minibeasts from around the world to show us. In English we will be reading different poems about minibeasts and learning some off by heart to perform for an interclass poetry competition. In Art we will be learning about the artist ‘Henri Matisse.’ We will be looking at some of his collages and using his style to help us create our own minibeast collages.
