Reception Curriculum 2017-2018

May 2018

The children in Reception have been making healthy choices. We discussed what foods we can eat to keep us healthy and we made a fruit salad. The children shared how they keep fit at home by going to swimming lessons and other activities.

April 2018

Reception were lucky enough to go on a trip to the farm. All the classes had a farmer show us around Bocketts farm. The farmer even showed us how to milk a goat too.

Everyone enjoyed a bumpy tractor ride where the children got to see all the animals on the farm.  The children saw a variety of animals and got to pet some.  The goats were very keen to greet us. There was also lots of newborn lambs at the farm. One had been born on the Wednesday morning we visited.

The children also watched a pig race. We all chose a pig to cheer on and some children got to wave a coloured flag for their pig. Thank you to all the parents that helped on both trips. Everyone had a fantastic time!

    March 2018

Reception have been learning about Spring. We had a very exciting delivery. Chicks! The children were lucky enough to watch them hatch. They have watched them grow and we have learnt all about the life cycle of a chick, through reading infomation books. The children have created chick paintings; pictures on the computer; playdough models and fantastic pieces of writing. We cant wait to see chickens on our farm trip!

When the chicks went back, we read the story 'The Little Red Hen'. The children baked bread and we talked about the changes. It tasted delicious.

We have also been planting sunflowers. The children read instructions using their phonics and tricky words to plant a sunflower. We have been learning about what plants need to grow.

All the children planted popcorn seeds in the soil tray. We cant wait to see what will happen! We are watering them everyday.

World Book Day was a success in Reception. The children dressed up as their favourite book characters and enjoyed sharing stories with their friends.

February 2018

The children have wrapped up warm and enjoyed the snowy weather. They have made snowballs and even tried to make a snowman.

We even had some snow monsters!

February 2018

We learned all about the celebration of Chinese New Year. We heard the story of the Great Race and retold it with figures and story maps. We learned about how Chinese people celebrate the special day.

We created Chinese dragons, made noodles and performed our own ribbon dance.

January 2018

The children were shocked when Naughty Bus destroyed their classrooms. The children have made some beauiful art work and enjoyed playing in the bust station outside.

They decided to find out more about the different sorts of transport that exists. We went on a walk to see what transport we could find. We were surprised to see some unusual things like diggers and go-karts!

December 2017

The children learnt a lot in preparation for the post office.  We wrote letters to Santa, teaching the children how to leave spaces between words.  We then counted out 56p each in 10s and 1s and put into money bags ready for the trip.    We also learnt about road safety and how to stay safe while walking to the post office.

The children got a huge amount out of the experience of paying for their stamps and posting their letters.  Their behaviour was amazing and they were very polite when in the post office.

Thank you to everybody who came to our Christmas concerts.  The children worked very hard learning the songs and their parts in the play.

November 2017

The children have really enjoyed learning about the Julia Donaldson book ‘Room on the Broom’.  The children wrote their own spells using the phonemes we have learnt so far in phonics.  They also used their blending skills to read their spells to each other.

We had a special visitor – a friendly witch from ZooLab!  She came and showed us lots of different animals including a snake, a tarantula and a giant cockroach! We learnt lots of interesting facts about the animals and got to stroke and hold most of them!

  October 2017

Earthsong

A world music workshop

This year we had another exciting visit from the company Earthsong who provide music workshops for our Reception children. This theme was Africa so children learnt about African music and instruments; such as an Ngoma (an African medicine drum) and a Bala ( a xylophone).

The children went on an ‘African safari’, moving to the beat of a drum and moving their bodies like different African animals.   We listened to a traditional story from Mozambique.  Children had a go at playing drums and other instruments as well as learning some simple African dance moves!

September 2017

Reception children are settling into school very well. They are getting used to new routines and are now very good at following our visual timetables. We are promoting independence so we do expect the children to put their own coats, bags and bottles away in the mornings and find them when they need to. Each morning they have name recognition practise by finding their name card to ‘self-register’ in their classroom. The children are learning the names of their new classmates (and teachers) and making new friends. We have been playing lots of games during carpet times and mixing up groups of children to help them with this.

The children have been getting used to our school rules and behaviour expectations, such as sitting smartly and showing good listening at carpet time or tidying up at tidy-up time. We have been giving out lots of stickers to children who are making good choices and showing us excellent behaviour.

The children have settled well into the lunchtime routine.  Lunch times at the start of the year can be unsettling for some children but they are starting to become much more confident and many of them are trying new things!

Thank you very much for sending in your photographs and souvenirs from the different places you have been over the summer. The children loved talking about the places they had been and sharing their experiences. We have put lots of the photos together in a display and the children love finding themselves or their friends and pointing out other places they have also been to!

The children have been learning about their class animal (Lion, Elephant, Zebra, Giraffe) such as where they live in the wild, what special features they have (such as a long neck or a fluffy mane) and what noise they make. The children have created artworks of their class animal using paint or collage materials, many of which will be displayed around the school.

We will be learning about Africa this half term.  We will be exploring animals that live in Africa, and looking closely at their patterns. On October 6th we are being visited by Earth Song for an ‘African music workshop’.

We are very appreciative of parents who came to the ‘Reception Parents Talk’ last week. Parents evening will be 19th October and 2nd November where you will have a chance to speak with the Class Teacher and look at your child’s Learning Journal.

April 2017 - May 2017

Reception loved their trip to the farm.  The children watched a goat being milked and felt how the milk came out warm.  They went on a tractor ride, and saw lots of animals in the fields.  We had our lunch in a barn!  The children also had the opportunity to stoke small and large animals – we always remembered to wash our hands afterwards!  We also saw a pig race and cheered on our favourites!

There has been lots of amazing learning that has come from the experience of going to the farm.  We have painted and collaged farm animals, looking closely at photos taken on the trip.

We have written a recount of our farm trip, and written lists of what animals the children saw.  Outside in our role play we have had a farm shop that sells eggs, milk and cheese.  Thank you to everyone who brought in containers we could use.  The children have been learning how buy two items by counting the coins altogether.  We also learnt where different products come from such as what is made from milk.

Thank you to everyone who came to our class assemblies.  The children loved seeing you there.

March 2017

Chicks

The children loved having the chicks in reception.  When they first cam they were eggs, and most of them hatched very quickly!  The children loved coming in in the mornings and seeing if any more had hatched overnight!  Luckily some also hatched during school hours!

The children observed the changes that happen to the chicks as they hatch and grow bigger.  We also learnt how to take care of the chicks and the importance of food and water.  The children produced some amazing writing about facts they learnt about chicks.  In the second week of the chicks coming, the children had the opportunity to hold them.  The children were very calm and gentle.

Goldilocks and the 3 bears

We have started learning about Goldilocks and the 3 bears.  We have read lots of different versions of Goldilocks.  We retold the story with actions and some of us acted the story out.  We have been learning how to ask relevant questions, and asked these when ‘Goldilocks’ came to visit.  There have been lots of opportunities in our busy learning to retell Goldilocks – our home corner outside has been transformed into the 3 Bears cottage.

There have been lots of opportunities to learn maths through the story of Goldilocks.  The children made porridge, learning how to use language related to capacity.  In our mud kitchen outside the children have been making porridge and using scales to weigh it.

World book Day

The children loved dressing up as their favourite characters.  There was an amazing range of characters and books.

January 2017

Naughty Bus

This half term we are learning about the story of the naughty bus.  We took the naughty bus around our outside area and took photos of where it travelled to!

We have had a bus role play outside. Children are using number tiles to make the numbers of familiar buses and developing their speaking and listening skills when pretending to go on bus journeys.

Hot Chocolate Café

We have recently opened a role-play café outside where the children can order and pay for a real hot chocolate and snack. It is very popular with all of the children in Early Years!

They look at the price list to work out how much they need to pay and count out the right number of pennies.

Some children have been learning to pay using 2p coins. We teach them to tap each coin 2 times as they work towards counting in 2s.

Bears

We are now learning about bears.  Thank you to everyone who sent in a bear with their child.  The children have loved taking their bear on an adventure.  Children will be writing their own stories about their bear’s adventure.  Children have also been writing name tags for their bears and using cubes to measure how tall their bears are and say who has the shortest bear in the class and who has the tallest bear.  The children have had lots of speaking opportunities to tell their friends all about their bears.

November 2016

In Reception we have started learning about the book Room on a Broom by Julia Donaldson.  The children have really enjoyed retelling the story both inside and outside.  We have been using the sounds we have learnt so far to write spells.

The children have loved learning how to use money in our Autumn shop.  Thank you to everyone who sent in fruit and vegetables to keep the shop stocked up!

This week was ‘Antibullying week’.  The children learnt about the story of ‘Rainbow Fish’ and how the characters in the story felt when Rainbow fish was unkind.  We then discussed how to be a good friend.

Next week the children will be writing their letters to Santa ready to post on our post office trip the following week.  Please remember to tell your child’s class teacher if you would prefer the letter written to a family member instead.

We have started preparing for our Christmas show.  We are learning lots of songs and actions.  If your child has a speaking part, they will bring home their lines.  Please practise these with your child and encourage them to use a loud, clear voice.
